How Much Do Fitted Wardrobes Cost in Nairobi?

Ask ten joiners in Nairobi what a fitted wardrobe costs and you will get ten different numbers. That is not because anyone is hiding anything — it is because "a wardrobe" can mean a two-door melamine unit or a lit, floor-to-ceiling dressing wall with smoked glass and soft-close drawers. This guide explains what actually drives the price, so you can compare quotes fairly and spend where it matters.
The five things that decide the price
Almost every fitted wardrobe quotation in Kenya is built from the same five decisions. Understanding them is the fastest way to read a quote.
- Size. Most workshops price by running metre of wall or by the number of door sections. A full-height wardrobe that reaches the ceiling uses more board than one that stops short, but it also removes the dusty gap on top and looks built-in rather than placed.
- Board and carcass material. Melamine-faced chipboard, moisture-resistant MDF and plywood all behave differently. The carcass is the part you rarely see, but it decides whether shelves sag and doors stay aligned.
- Door style and finish. Plain laminate doors cost least. Lacquered, fluted, veneered, glass or mirrored doors each add material and workshop time.
- Internal layout. Every drawer, shoe rack, trouser pull-out and jewellery tray adds cost. A good designer plans these from what you actually own, not from a catalogue.
- Hardware and lighting. Soft-close hinges, full-extension runners and LED strips are where cheap and lasting wardrobes separate. Hardware is a small share of the price and a large share of the daily experience.

Why two quotes for the same wall can be so different
When quotes differ widely, check what is included before comparing totals. Some quotations leave out the back panels, the filler strips that close gaps against uneven walls, delivery, installation or the final adjustment visit. Others price the doors in a premium finish but the interior in the cheapest board. Ask every supplier to list the carcass material, door finish, hardware brand and what happens at installation.
Also check who measures. A wardrobe built from a site survey and shop drawings fits the room; one built from rough measurements usually needs site cutting, which is where quality slips.
Where to spend and where to save
If the budget is tight, protect the parts you touch every day: hinges, drawer runners and the carcass. You can save on the door finish — a well-made plain door looks better for longer than a decorative door on weak hinges. Lighting is worth adding at the build stage, because running cables later is disruptive.
If you are planning a walk-in closet rather than a wall of wardrobes, read what a walk-in closet actually needs before you brief anyone.
How we price wardrobes at Royalwoods
We visit, measure and talk through what you need to store before drawing anything. You then receive elevations and a written quotation that lists materials, finishes and hardware line by line, so you can adjust the specification deliberately. Sliding or hinged doors?
Hinged doors open fully, so you can see the whole interior at once, and they cost less in hardware. Sliding doors save space in narrow bedrooms where a swinging door would hit the bed, but good sliding gear is more expensive and only half the wardrobe is open at a time. For long walls, many clients choose hinged doors with a slim handle profile or push-to-open fittings for a clean, handle-less look.
Questions to ask before you accept a quote
- Is the price for the full height from floor to ceiling, including top filler panels?
- What board is used for the carcass, the back panels and the shelves?
- Which brand of hinges and drawer runners is included, and are they soft-close?
- Is lighting included, and where do the switch, driver and cables go?
- Does the price include delivery, installation, waste removal and a return visit for adjustments?
- How long is the workshop time, and when can installation start?
Making a fitted wardrobe last
A wardrobe is only as good as the wall and floor it sits on. We check for damp before fixing to exterior walls, leave a small ventilation gap where needed, and level the base carefully so doors stay aligned. Over time, hinges may need a small adjustment as timber settles; good hinges adjust in seconds with a screwdriver. Wipe lacquered doors with a soft damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaners, and your wardrobe will look new for years.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to make a fitted wardrobe in Nairobi?
It depends on size and finish. Most of the work happens in the workshop after the drawings are approved, and installation on site is usually quick. You receive a programme with the quotation.
Is it cheaper to buy a ready-made wardrobe?
A freestanding wardrobe can cost less upfront, but it rarely uses the full wall or ceiling height, and it is not built for your room. A fitted wardrobe stores more in the same space and is made to last.
Can I add lighting to an existing wardrobe?
Often yes, with surface-mounted LED profiles and discreet cabling. It is simpler and neater when planned during the build.
