Kitchen Cabinet Materials in Kenya: MDF, Plywood or Wood?

The material your kitchen cabinets are made from decides how they cope with steam, spills and years of doors opening and closing. In Kenya, where kitchens range from compact apartment galleys to large family kitchens with a separate wet area, the right choice depends on where each part sits and how it is finished.

Carcass versus doors

Every cabinet has two parts: the carcass (the box) and the door or drawer front. They do not have to be the same material. Many of the best kitchens pair a sturdy, moisture-resistant carcass with a door chosen for appearance.

The common options

Melamine-faced chipboard

Affordable and widely available, with a hard-wearing factory finish. Its weakness is water: once the edge banding fails near a sink, the board can swell. It works best for dry areas and when edges are properly sealed.

MDF and moisture-resistant MDF

MDF machines cleanly, which makes it ideal for painted, lacquered and fluted doors. Moisture-resistant MDF (usually green-cored) is the better choice around sinks and dishwashers. Painted MDF gives the smooth, handle-less look you see in many modern kitchens.

Plywood

Layered veneers make plywood strong and good at holding screws, which suits carcasses under heavy worktops. Quality varies a lot, so the grade matters more than the name.

Solid wood

Beautiful and repairable, but timber moves with humidity. In a kitchen it is best used for frames, open shelving or feature elements rather than large flat panels.

Finishes matter as much as the board

A good board with a poor finish will still fail. Look at the edges: properly applied edge banding or a sealed lacquer stops water getting in. Matt lacquers hide fingerprints better than high gloss; gloss is easier to wipe and reflects light in darker kitchens. Laminate doors are durable and practical for busy family kitchens.

What we usually recommend

For most Nairobi kitchens we specify moisture-resistant board around the sink and dishwasher, a strong carcass under stone or quartz worktops, and a door finish chosen for how the family actually cooks. We also plan ventilation behind ovens and fridges so heat does not bake the panels. You can see this approach in our custom kitchens service and in the kitchen layout guide.

Worktops and how they affect the cabinets

Heavy stone or quartz worktops need strong carcasses and proper support at joints and overhangs. Laminate worktops are lighter and more affordable but need careful sealing around the sink. Solid timber worktops are warm and repairable but need regular oiling, especially near water. Choose the worktop early, because it affects the carcass specification, the cut-outs and the installation sequence.

Hardware is part of the material decision

The best board in the world will disappoint if the hinges sag or the drawers stick. Soft-close hinges and full-extension runners carry most of the daily load in a kitchen, so they deserve as much attention as the doors. Heavy pot drawers need runners rated for the weight, and tall pull-out pantries need quality mechanisms that glide under load.

Caring for your cabinets

  • Wipe spills straight away, especially around the sink and dishwasher.
  • Use a soft cloth and mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads on lacquer and gloss.
  • Open the dishwasher only after the steam has settled, so moisture does not hit cabinet edges.
  • Keep the extractor running while cooking to reduce grease and steam on high cabinets.
  • Tighten or adjust hinges occasionally so doors stay aligned.

Small habits like these add years to any kitchen, whatever it is made from.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best material for kitchen cabinets in Kenya?

There is no single best material. Moisture-resistant MDF or good plywood for the carcass, with a lacquered, laminate or veneer door, suits most Kenyan kitchens. The finish and edge sealing matter as much as the board.

Is MDF good for kitchen cabinets?

Yes, when it is moisture-resistant grade and properly sealed. It is the best base for painted and fluted doors.

How long do kitchen cabinets last?

Well-made cabinets with good hinges and runners last many years. Most early failures come from water damage at unsealed edges and from cheap hardware.
